  • De-Escalation: Why is it Always the Cop’s Fault When it Doesn’t Work Out?

There’s a lot of talk about de-escalation these days as if there’s an incantation officers know that can calm any person no matter how under-the-influence or psychotic he or she is. If an incident requires an officer to use force, these folks deem the officers failed to “de-escalate.”

But there are some things that these people never consider. It’s too easy to watch a use of force, whether in person or on video, and decide “I would have done it better.” Doing things in your mind always works out perfectly. In my mind, I can quarterback a game better than Tom Brady—ever has—in his entire career. In my mind.

And there are other things people don’t consider. We all can learn techniques that are broadly accepted as likely to defuse potentially violent situations. Also, some of us are naturally better at de-escalation than others. That’s just human diversity. Otherwise, everyone could sing like Freddie Mercury.

And then some incidents just don’t fit into a neat category. A call I responded to illustrates an aspect of de-escalation hard to categorize. It involves firefighters; you know, heroes (as my firefighter wife likes to remind me—often). My beat was filled with mental health facilities and public housing where many of these clients lived.

I got a call to assist the fire department with an aggressive but not yet assaultive man with mental health issues. Mental health professionals had called them to deal with a man with a head wound outside their facility. When I arrived, I saw a man sitting by a tree, with two firefighters talking to him. Then the man began banging his head against a tree, causing bleeding.

As I approached, he paused. He spoke Spanish, which we didn’t, and he said he was from Puerto Rico. Partially calmed, and not willing to come with us peacefully, rather than go hands-on, risking injuring him more, the firefighters came up with a plan to de-escalate (I should have known things had gone terribly wrong at that moment).

A firefighter still at the station, which was only a few blocks away, happened to be originally from Puerto Rico. So, aside from the fact he spoke Spanish, he and the man hailed from the same place.

He arrived, and you could tell we all thought the situation was in hand—about to be de-escalated. The man had calmed and was now only thumping his head lightly against the tree, but not enough to cause injury. Then the firefighter approached and spoke in Spanish to the man. The man replied and seemed to bristle. The firefighter said something else. The man replied, this time, angrily. The firefighter said one other thing, and the man exploded.

He began screaming something in Spanish and was ramming his head against the tree. No choice; we had to go hands-on. We restrained the man, and I put my handcuffs on him. We got him on a gurney, into four-point restraints, and fire transported him to the hospital.

The firefighters in the ambulance drove off, while the Puerto Rican firefighter and his partner who’d arrived later remained. I asked him what happened. He explained to me that the man was from a different part of Puerto Rico. He said, “He could tell by my accent I was from a place where people he didn’t like lived.”

I’d never thought much about it because Puerto Rico is relatively small. However, just like here on the mainland, it happens. I was born and raised in Massachusetts, a small state where, generally, the accents are different in Boston than in Worcester than in Springfield.

The point is, there are so many factors that go into de-escalation some people don’t consider. Some people will not de-escalate no matter what you do. Could another officer have de-escalated an agitated person? Sure. Just like another officer might de-escalate a situation that, that officer could not. With de-escalation, sometimes it seems more art and chance than math and science.

So, the next time you hear someone accuse an officer of “failing to de-escalate,” think about this story. And, think about all the stories you don’t know that show the same thing: if an officer uses force, it doesn’t automatically mean they failed to de-escalate. Again, some people just refuse to cooperate with our neat little plans. As the Yiddish adage goes: Mann Tracht, Un Gott Lacht. Man plans and God laughs.

  • America’s Baghdad Bob Media Culture: Legacy vs. Integrity News.

What happens when Baghdad Bob becomes our nation’s news anchorman. Well, we don’t have to wonder because it’s happened. First, you remember him, right? Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahhaf. He was Saddam Hussein’s spokesman during the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq. He’d give a “news report” that everything was fine, and the Allied troops were nowhere in sight. This, as American news outlets, juxtaposed Baghdad Bob’s version of events with images of U.S. Army tanks rolling down Iraqi streets.

Americans appreciated the unintended comfort of humor he provided during an otherwise serious time. Like when he said, “God will roast their stomachs in hell at the hands of the Iraqis.” There has been no confirmation about what happened to the dictator’s mouthpiece. However, as Peter Lucas wrote in the Boston Herald when making a similar comparison, “there is no truth to the rumor that he now runs CNN.” Likely, true, but I wouldn’t put money on it.

As a cop, I became accustomed to people lying to me. I remember in the academy our crime scene investigation/interrogation instructors taught us that, as we grew experienced on the streets, we’d one day realize we possessed two finely tuned bullshit detectors. They were attached to the sides of our heads.

I understand having to use this high-tech advantage at work but at home, watching the nightly news… really? But that’s what’s happened, hasn’t it? I’d list all the media outlets in on the let’s-help-the-Democrats-win-at-all-costs media cabal, but I’d far exceed a manageable word count. What we have now is the legacy media vs. the integrity media.

Think about it this way: The other day I was talking with my wife and I said, “You know how I know we have integrity on our political side (conservative/libertarian)?”

Used to my rants, she humored me and asked, “How?”

I said, “because the legacy media (ABC, CBS, NBC, New York Times, etc. and their cohorts, now, including the FOX News-corporate), only provide their audiences with limited, redacted, biased information, or they just censor it. Their audiences only know, at most, a biased half of the story on any issue.

The integrity media (Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Mark Levin, Sean Hannity, Tucker Carlson, Laura Ingraham, Dan Bongino, Newsmax, The New York Post, The Boston Herald, etc. and their allies), by comparison, provide the entire story on issues. They also admit their political bias when necessary, and they do not limit, redact, or censor the news. In fact, they are most fond of admonishing their audiences not to believe them but to do their own research and make up their own minds.

I cannot count the number of times I see news happening—real, undeniable news stories reported in the integrity media that just don’t show up in the legacy media. For a recent example, a massive gathering of President Trump supporters swarmed into Washington D.C. last weekend. Supporters organized the MAGA demonstrations to show the President support and to vent frustrations over an obviously contaminated election by commiserating with fellow patriots who love America.

After the event, Antifa and BLM supporting thugs attacked peaceful Trump supporters. In one particularly heinous incident, the mob verbally and physically attacked a young couple walking with their children, mom pushing a stroller. They were wearing not only Trump gear but also police supporting attire (insert blood-chilling scream here).

The looks on those children’s faces, scared to death, were distressing to watch. The fact the family appeared to be of mixed race made the incident all the more incongruous. I guess that black mother and her children’s black lives don’t matter. The Democratic Party’s Brownshirts descended on them and other innocent victims like a sandstorm on a Middle Eastern city.

The brutes harassed and assaulted the family for supporting the current (and hopefully continuing) Republican President of the United States. President Trump rightly referred to these criminals as, “ANTIFA SCUM!” The President also asserted Democrat Mayor Muriel Bowser wasn’t doing her job. Something I, as a retired police officer, wondered about. How could she possibly not have seen this coming and adequately staffed the event? It’s not as if leftist goons don’t attack Trump supporters all the time. Or… Madame Mayor is this what we get for supporting someone you don’t like?

These attacks are not isolated. Although you’d never know it by watching the legacy media. Antifa and BLM thug “medics” attacked another Trump-supporting young couple and their children during the D.C. event. The mob terrorized them, including pouring an unknown liquid on them. Also, back in October, BLM and Antifa thugs threw rocks and attacked a “Jews for Trump” rally.

Interestingly, police arrested 11 people during the Jews for Trump rally. And while I do not support so-called “hate crimes” (because they punish thoughts, not just actions), but the Left supposedly does. However, the story says the suspects were charged with a variety of crimes, including assaulting a police officer, with no mention of any “hate crime.” Remember, they targeted a Jewish group. Anyone think any group attacking a Muslim march wouldn’t have been slathered with hate crime charges?

So, hearing about the attack on that mixed-race family in a text from my son, where could I go to find more news about the incident? ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, etc. No, if I went to any of those sources, I’d wonder why my son was lying to me.

Violent attacks on peaceful, innocent people, simply walking back from a political gathering in our nation’s capital is a legitimate news story, right? But just like Joe and Hunter Biden’s corrupt business dealings, including in Ukraine, Russia, and China, attracted little to no curiosity from the legacy media, or it got outright exoneration, neither do political barbarians warrant coverage for attacking young families. No. If you don’t want your news provided by Baghdad Bob, you’ll need to watch the integrity media. Just like millions of Americans are now doing.

  • Take Back America, Americans!

    November 1, 2020

    by Bryan Pomper

More than ever before, COVID-19 public policy, assisted by the mainstream media (MSM), is herding people like sheep. Most of these policies make little to no sense when held up to the light and scrutinized with any logical questioning.

The MSM, liberal politicians and useful idiots in sports and Hollywood have driven home these asinine mandates and rules to the point where it is fear that people are reacting to, not truth and logic. Take the mask mandates. T scientists who created the Great Barrington Declaration (GBD), three of the most prominent virologists in the world, from Stanford, Harvard, and Oxford, oppose lockdowns and mask mandates. Over 30,000 medical professionals have signed on to endorse it. But if you ask someone who watches the MSM about it, they’ll likely tell you they have never heard of the GBD, a more than credible international effort.

“Protect your neighbor.” “Stay safe.” “Do your part.” “Keep your social distance; stay six feet away.” These are all things lockdown and mask proponents have drilled down onto our emotional responses over the last 226 days, which was originally 15 days to “Flatten the curve.”

Do a little research and find out about masking to “protect” yourself or your neighbor. These masks were never intended to be worn for long periods of time. Even OSHA recognizes that this is a health hazard, not something to keep people healthy or protect others from getting sick.

Surgeons may wear these masks for extended periods of time during surgery. However, they have extra Oxygen pumped into the room to comply with OSHA oxygen requirements. If you are not wearing a surgical mask and choose to wear a cloth face covering, you are also putting yourself at a higher risk of pneumonia, thrush, lightheadedness, and other serious health concerns.

The KGB performed a social experiment in the mid-1960s into the human psyche and their reaction to fear. The results were incredible and are still true today. The study concluded that if the general population is exposed to information that induces a fear response for right around two months, people are so brainwashed that even if clear, credible evidence to the contrary is presented, people, will reject the new information because fear is the most powerful emotion people have.

As Americans, we have a responsibility to make sure we are vigilant and caring for the tree of liberty. It is a sacred tree, and if we don’t protect it, the world will lose the opportunity to live in or strive for liberty forever.

I want with all my heart to see people wake up en mass. I believe that is happening in certain areas and with some demographics. I see Blacks, Latinos, Gays, and other groups taking the “red pill” in seemingly record numbers. I feel the energy for Donald Trump, even here in the Seattle area. I witnessed a group of about 30 supporters, waving Trump signs on the corner of one of the most liberal neighborhoods in Seattle.

This would have never happened four years ago. I believe it’s happening now because people are sick of the illogical mandates, especially masking healthy people for no reason other than to make the population easier to control. If you want your country back, vote R, stop the mandates, stop the BS, and let’s get back to being Americans who pursue happiness, not safety at the cost of liberty.
